Ironman Connected Athlete

We partnered with The Ironman Group to define and design a digital training experience for triathletes to prepare for the iconic Ironman events around the world. With access to thousands of enthusiastic and elite athletes, they are uniquely positioned to create a world-class training platform.

Discovery. And then Design.

We collected platform requirements from the Ironman team, and interviewed and researched many technology partners to understand how the current web platform operated. From this base, we did rigorous user discovery research with athletes who spanned from the professional triathlete, to the aspirational first-time racer to create a detailed understanding of their needs, and what frustrated them with the current market options.

Product Design challenge

The product design focused on two specific users: the elite amateur who wants to improve on their past race performances, and the first time triathlete who has the goal of reaching the finish line. Serving two very different athletes was a challenge and we carefully prototyped and iterated with users from each category. Our solution was a delightful step-by-step onboarding flow for the first time athlete and supporting them with opportunities for coaching, viewing past Ironman races, and suggesting races to sign up for to prepare for the longer events.

For the seasoned athlete, they can skip all the educational features and start training on virtual Ironman courses with just a few taps on the mobile app. It was challenging to constrain the features for the first release as our users were excited to experience all the functionality we had discussed with them.

The Journey of the Athletes

In addition to these high-fidelity prototypes, we created a customer journey map to bring everyone on the team together to a shared understanding of how each athlete progressed through to race day and beyond. We also generated a detailed roadmap to show where new features, functionality, technology and partners would be added to the platform so that the Ironman team could plan its cross-functional activities.
